Most schools are back in session and in some areas, temperatures are even starting to drop! Fall is on the horizon and now is a great time to perform an exterior property inspection and address any issues before changing weather makes improvements more challenging. Also, taking care of property safety issues in September can help ensure your church is ready for things like trunk-or-treat events or other fall festivals.

Here are some key areas to look at as part of a routine exterior property inspection:

Trees and shrubs

A professional should examine trees and remove any that are dead or rotting.  Any limbs that hang over buildings should be trimmed.  Limbs and shrubs should be kept neat and any that obstruct walkways, lighting, signage, or security cameras should be trimmed or removed.

Gutters

Especially as leaves begin to fall, be sure to have your gutters kept clean and free of debris. Clogged gutters can cause serious water damage if a backup occurs.

Buildings and playgrounds

Have your buildings checked by a professional for things like damaged roofs/shingles, broken siding, and/or fencing and make any necessary repairs. Also have your playground equipment inspected for potential hazards and fixed as soon as possible to help ensure children’s safety.

Exterior lighting

Be sure that your exterior lighting is working properly and have your broken or burnt out lights repaired or replaced. Lighting should be visible and not obstructed.

Equipment storage

Church property equipment should be stored securely in safe areas. Should severe weather strike, this can help keep objects from blowing away and causing damage.

Windows and doors

Check caulking around doors and windows and have it repaired as necessary to help maintain watertight seals and prevent water damage.

Parking lots and walkways

Examine pavement and sidewalks and repair any cracks, potholes, or uneven surfaces to help prevent injuries to property visitors or damage to vehicles.
