With it now being spring, many churches might be taking advantage of the warmer weather and performing some exterior property maintenance. If you are not sure where to start, here are some tips to help keep your exterior property safe and looking presentable for your congregants and visitors.
Have a professional remove dead or rotting trees and regularly trim limbs or branches that hang over buildings. Doing this can help prevent accidents and damage caused by falling trees as well as maintain a tidy landscaping appearance.
Keep your gutters clean so they do not clog with leaves to help ensure proper water flow and prevent water backup. Installing gutter guards can be a good idea to decrease the amount of cleaning maintenance needed as they prevent clogging.Â
Repair broken or burnt-out lights and trim shrubs, bushes, and other landscaping that could obstruct security cameras, outdoor lighting, or signage.
Repair or replace caulking or weatherstripping around doors and windows as necessary to maintain watertight seals and help prevent water damage.
Inspect your grounds for areas that need repairs and have a professional address them. This can include repairing or replacing loose or broken siding, shingles, fences, playground equipment, etc. Additionally, identify and address cracks, potholes, and uneven surfaces in parking lots, sidewalks, and walkways.
Store equipment securely and in a safe area. In the event of severe weather, this can help prevent objects from blowing away and causing damage to your property.
Inspect your exterior buildings for chipped or stripped paint and touch-up areas in need. Keeping up with painting can also help keep out moisture.
Following these tips and addressing any other issues you identify that are specific to your ministry’s exterior can help you enjoy your property with peace of mind!
